Kollywood
Kollywood, termine che deriva dalla fusione delle parole Hollywood e Kodambakkam (localit? del Tamil Nadu), indica il cinema in lingua tamil che ha nella citt? di Chennai il centro propulsore. Il pubblico del cinema tamil raggiunge anche gli altri stati dell’India meridionale, ? seguito in Malesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka e Sud Africa, presso le comunit? di lingua tamil residenti nei paesi occidentali.1
Almost Ten years back, Malayalam actor Mukesh made an enthusiastic decision to try out an acting career in Kollywood. He immediately landed in K Balachandar’s movie ‘Jaathy Mally’ as the hero.2
The name, Kollywood, has derived from Kodambakkam, the area in Chennai (formerly Madras), where Kollywood films are largely produced. Tamil language movies are also filmed in Sri Lanka.3
Sameera Reddy who is making her Kollywood debut opposite Surya in Vaaranam Aayiram will be next seen in another Tamil movie with Ajith Kumar. Ajith is currently acting in Aegan under the production of Raju Sundaram with Nayantara.4
The Big Three ruled Kollywood for more than two decades before yielding place to a new generation of actors, to new wave cinema and to a new breed of directors who created movies very different from those of 50s and 60s thereby bringing to end an era of stereotyped hero oriented movies. They however continue to be remembered for their acting even though they are gone, leaving only memories.5
